As Always, Julia

As always, Julia

While reading the book “As Always, Julia: The Letters of Julia Child and Avis DeVoto: Food, Friendship, and the Making of a Masterpiece”

I realized the struggle it was to have Mastering the Fine Art of French cooking ever published - crazy to think of from our view. Right?

A view where everyone has heard the name Julia Child.

Well everyone over 35 at least.

Anyway, as a writer I was thinking how hard it can be to break through the norm.

When Julia was working to get her extremely popular cookbook off her desk and into American women’s hands, it was a time of convenience casseroles made from Campbells cream of whatever soup.

The idea of using or finding fresh ingredients in our local markets was just unheard of.

Wow, how far we have come, to just go right back.

I remember one of my dear friends Grandma’s laughing at us for wanting to learn to make homemade bread.

She said she was never so happy to be able to buy sliced bread in the store.

Hence the phrase “best thing since sliced bread” …

I get it, convenience.

But now you see a whole generation of women, and men taking back the kitchen and their health too.

We don’t want sliced bread that can stay on a shelf for two months, and poison us along the way.

Or Campbell soup casseroles! Well except I will admit I really love green bean casserole on turkey day. Shoot me if you want, I will not retract.

But this message isn’t about cooking. It’s about your assignment.

And if you’re like me and find yourself with a “Julia Child” assignment… one that won’t fit the “normal “ mold.

Well, you will have to break it!

AND Hold on, because it will get bumpy some days. You will think whatever, let them eat cream of whatever casseroles. But then faith will rise up and remind you,

God knows what He is doing and you really are assigned this mountain for such a time as thing.

I hope you see here that cooking is a metaphor, unless you really feel led to write a cookbook of course. That’s not the point. The point is just because God calls you to something, doesn’t mean it will be easy. Favor often looks different than we expect it too and because of that many miss it.

Prepare your heart for the unexpected.

Prepare your heart for not everyone understanding your assignment.

Prepare your heart for some hard days.

But also for the best days of your life.

Take my advice, there is no better place to be than in the middle of God’s plan!

So let’s crush that mold together and build a new one!

Here at House of Acts Press we want to help you do just that. Break the mold when it doesn’t fit, and create a new one or connect you to others who can help. We want to see God’s plans and assignments and purposes fill this Earth.

We dare you to dream with God again.

For God’s glory,

Shannon R. Hess
